3rd. National Expert Roundtables on Media Policy

´School of Communications and Media, n.o.´ organised the ‘3. National Expert Roundtables on Media Policy ‘ which took place on 12 December 2012 from 09: 30 am at SPK Centre in Bratislava.

Slovak research and non- profit organization ´School of Communication and Media cooperate for more than two years with other european organization on MEDIADEM project. Its purpose is to identify which policy processes, tools and instruments can best support the development of free and independent media. The project combines a country-based study with a comparative analysis across media sectors and types of media services and investigates the complex array of policy approaches and regulatory, co-regulatory and self-regulatory practices established to safeguard media freedom and independence.

National Expert Roundtables on Media Policy Seminar is professional discussion about main media- policy problems in Slovakia. Discussion, as well as individual contribution was organized in the form of six panels: Ensure consistency in the rulings of the Supreme Court; Guarantee appropriate levels of reimbursement of damages; Focus on the specialisation of judges/courts; Enable greater freedom of speech; Strengthen the role of local media; Give support to freelance journalism.

All attending lawyers and most of participants expressed their dissatisfaction how inconsistently are rulings/judgments of Slovak
courts in disputes related to the protection of personality (libel and defamation cases) when they favor the rich and powerful.

for the best contributor was elected Mgr. Ondrej Jurišta. He won the opportunity to join an international conference on media policy. This will take place in early February 2013 in Brussels.

“Director of Schools for communications and media, Andrej Školkay, told about seminar: It is already the third seminar on media policy, which took place in 2012. I am very glad that this time we were able to welcome and listen to the views of many interesting participants. The conclusions of the seminar will hopefully inspire the politicians and help further direction of media policy in Slovakia. “
