Work Package 6 members hold meeting in Perugia, Italy, October 4-5, 2013. All WP6 members agreed to work on case studies. They will focus on the relationship between journalism and corruption selecting national cases that can show examples of:

  • Good practices (very initial research questions: journalists discovering corruption – how did it start? Why? Which journalists discovered the corrupted practices? Which newspapers? How did the story develop? Which results and consequences?

  • Bad practices (journalists being part of networks of corruption – which journalists? Which newspapers? Which interpersonal network? What it is exchanged?)

  • More complicated cases, where it is difficult to determine whether they are examples of good or bad practices.

The issue of studying also journalists’ and PR’s ethical codes, and their violations, has been raised (document analysis, analysis of complaints and violations of the codes, interviews with relevant actors). WP6 members decided that two levels of content analysis should be carried on:

  • computer-based content analysis (with Gallup software)

  • human-based content analysis (following the model already used by BCE)

Concerning the coverage of corruption, the aim is to study in a comparative way:

  • how much (number of cases, articles etc.)

  • involved actors (institutions, single figures etc.)

  • which level (national/local)

  • evolution over time

  • topics/sectors

  • what kind of stories (reporting, commentary, editorials, investigative journalism, etc.)

  • where the story starts in the public sphere (judges, journalists)

  • differences among newspapers, partisanship

It has been decided that each country will select at least:

  • 3 national newspaper websites

  • 1 business newspaper

  • 1 local newspaper

  • 3 news portals (online news outlet that does not exist in print format)

  • 1 tabloid

  • 2 weekly

The choices have to be taken considering:

  • the diffusion of the news outlets (trying to select the most diffused ones)

  • the political affiliation (trying to select a news outlets representative of different political positions)

  • the availability of archives that allows to go back in time

Period of time to be analysed: first step, from 2005 up to the end of 2014.

Next WP6 meeting will be in Bucharest, the 21 and 22 of march 2014.
